BPMN shapes have attributes that can be configured under the Format Shape tab in the Utility Panel.

The following variation attributes can be changed or added to BPMN shapes. The available variations vary by shape:

- Activity type
- Event type
- Gateway type
- Task type
- Data object type
- Activity Markers
- Call Activity
- Interrupting / Non-interrupting
- Initiating
- Throwing
